A Train is an environmental hazard which first appeared in the map Well, and has been used in other maps since. Trains typically appear on the map in the form of a railway crossing complete with warning lights and a ringing bell sound effect. The speed and the timing of the Train's appearance varies by map. Sometimes the train is only an engine, and other times it pulls flatcars or boxcars. Originally, the hazard was represented by a common 1970s diesel locomotive model (similar to an EMD GP38-2), but was later also represented by Metro coaches on District, a small diesel switcher on Banana Bay, and a glowing, haunted ghost train on Megalo. Frontier also features a custom Payload cart called "Li'l Chew Chew", which also functions as a map hazard similar to a train, and Snowplow features a train as its core capture point gimmick.

Contact with the front of a Train results in the destruction of buildings and the death of players, up to and including players currently receiving an ÜberCharge from a Medic. Players who cause an opponent to be struck and killed by a train through knockback or wound the opponent by any other means before the death are not credited with a kill assist.

Bugs

  • Stickybombs launched at a moving Train get stuck in the air at the point where the Stickybomb and Train met, instead of moving along with the Train, as seen here.
    • This bug does not occur for the Train in Snowplow — stickybombs bounce off whether it is moving or not.

Trivia

  • The Train on most maps bears the imaginary company name "Northern Express", while the paint scheme resembles the colors and lines of the historic real-life U.S. railroad company Southern Pacific's "Bloody Nose" livery. The locomotive also has several other SP-specific features, including a (non-functioning) beacon light on top of its cab, three additional headlights on its nose, and even a Nathan P-3 air horn.
  • The Train's air horn is a heavily edited stock sound, "TRAIN, FREIGHT - CROSSING BELLS, PASS BY WITH HORN" by Sound Ideas, which can also be heard in countless classic movies and TV shows. The same stock sound is also the source for the railroad crossing bells heard ingame.
  • The Train on Snowplow is a heavily modified version of the normal Northern Express locomotive model, with the nose stretched to form a wide "Canadian comfort cab", larger windows, and a snowplow fitted to the front. As Snowplow is a frozen northern map, this is fitting - many Canadian locomotives are essentially American designs modified with comfort cabs and snowplows, specifically for running in winter conditions just like ingame.
  • The Northern Express locomotive is numbered '7331', which is the popular gaming phrase 1337 ('leet' in numbers, a version of the word 'elite') backwards.
