My main concern is whether or not you're actually up to replace all of them with a different video format, this seems like one of those projects that'll be half-finished (Like the 3D cosmetic project). Hence why I recommended Boba to add the part about user space first. Hello, Sys!

Welcome to the Team Fortress 2 Official Wiki!

Here are a few links to get you started:

  • If you're not too familiar with editing wikis, you might like to start with Help:Editing.
  • If you already are familiar with wikiediting, you might want to try Help:Style guide.
  • Recent Changes will let you see others' contributions as they happen.
    • To make Recent Changes more useful for all users, remember to provide an edit summary in the "Summary" field before you save your changes.
    • You can set the wiki to prompt you for a summary in your preferences.
  • When posting on an article's Talk page you should add four tilde symbols or ~~~~ onto the end.
    • This will add a signature and timestamp to your comment so others can easily tell who posted it.
    • Any new sections on an article's Talk page should be added to the bottom of the page and not to the top.
    • When editing normal article pages, don't sign your contributions.
    • You can use the Signature Icon.png button in the editing toolbar to quickly add a signature.
  • If you have any questions or need any help, please feel free to leave a message for a staff member.
  • If you have trouble with anything on the wiki or you're not sure about a specific topic, feel free to join the IRC.
  • You can also customize your user page if you like.
    • When uploading images for use on your user page, please add the prefix User Sys to the file's name.
    • Additionally, if you would like to add any self-made content to the wiki, please do so by adding the prefix User:Sys/ to the page title when you create the page.

Once again, welcome to the Team Fortress 2 Wiki!

What are you doing with Template:Gen 1 Unusual effects?

Why did you replace one image with a .gif? They were all intentionally made .pngs to preserve quality and take up significantly less file space, allowing for faster page load times.

In any case, you should be uploading these .gifs to your user space, with appropriate naming schemes (example: User_Pilk_favouriteloadout.png).

If you want to change the images in this template to .gifs, please bring it up on the discussion page before making any edits. ~ Boba 18:22, 10 February 2021 (UTC)

Given the last discussion on GIFs for the Unusual effects was back in 2011, and with users most likely wanting to see how a specific unusual would look rather than viewing a static image this seems to be a welcome change. From looking at the image guidlines there isn't any specific mentions of not using GIFs, but can understand how this would fall under further discussion. I already have the full set of Gen 1 unusuals constructed as GIFs, ready to upload. The alternative that this would leave would be finding lower resolution YouTube videos for users wanting to see this specific event, which seems counterproductive with documenting their effects here. I'll have to see about getting some way to have animated examples of effects, but I really don't think having ~150 .gifs on one page is the move. Either way, if the last discussion was in 2011, then definitely feel free to bring it up again. Thanks. ~ Boba 18:43, 10 February 2021 (UTC)
This is a neat idea, but I'm afraid we can't allow high-res GIFs at this time due to technical limitations: the images here are only for display purposes, and there exist third-party websites or tools that showcase the particle animation in action. It is also a matter of reducing bandwidth usage and allow for faster load times, as Boba already mentioned. The effort is appreciated, though the best course of action is to start a discussion before making such immense changes or in the case of preparing such changes.
As for an alternative to GIFs, an embedded HTML5 video would suffice, with WebM or MP4 as the video format; this would also allow for autoplay and wouldn't need to be uploaded to any video platform while still retaining quality and minimizes bandwidth. Most gaming Wikis I have visited, the .webm had a built-in player, and it NEVER played automatically, only if user pressed the Play button. I'm not sure if there's a way to add custom "thumbnails" (an image that appears when the video was loaded, but not played at least once). With such thumbnails, we can add the current static images. People will have a somewhat good idea on what the Unusual is about, and if they would like to know how the effect works, they can press play. However, I have a few questions.
1) Several "modern" unusuals have a "spawning" animation, but all Unusuals are perfectly looped too, they don't abruptly end and start the Unusual animation again. It would be awesome if the .webms could loop the video forever, in a smooth fashion, but I have no idea how this could be achieved due to the "spawning" animation, only if we omit the spawning animation;
2) I'm not sure if the Wiki has .webm support, but I'm mostly sure an extension/plugin can be installed, just like how the "Thank" system was implemented;
3) For those who want to see all effects animating at once, do some sort of button script that presses "play" in all .webms on the page? The script/button would be built-in the page itself. Not sure if that's possible.

The "spawn" animation is only shown when, well, a player spawns. It takes such a short time and is mostly unnoticed by the majority of the players, maybe omitting it wouldn't be too bad, so we can do perfectly-looped Unusual effects. An option to "loop" should be available on the .webm player, right? However, we need to make Pyro does his/her "loser" stance completely still, not moving a single tiny bit. In the SFM project file that I provided in the Help:Unusual and Killstreak renders page, which is also used as the baseline for every render on the wiki, the Pyro already doesn't move, so that shouldn't be an issue. There's several issues with trying to make coherent .gifs of Unusual effects, as each effect inherently has an "intro", and due to the way the particle engine works, they will never loop. ~ Boba 23:25, 10 February 2021 (UTC)
