Hello, Treacherousfiend!

Welcome to the Team Fortress 2 Official Wiki!

Here are a few links to get you started:

  • If you're not too familiar with editing wikis, you might like to start with Help:Editing.
  • If you already are familiar with wikiediting, you might want to try Help:Style guide.
  • Recent Changes will let you see others' contributions as they happen.
    • To make Recent Changes more useful for all users, remember to provide an edit summary in the "Summary" field before you save your changes.
    • You can set the wiki to prompt you for a summary in your preferences.
  • When posting on an article's Talk page you should add four tilde symbols or ~~~~ onto the end.
    • This will add a signature and timestamp to your comment so others can easily tell who posted it.
    • Any new sections on an article's Talk page should be added to the bottom of the page and not to the top.
    • When editing normal article pages, don't sign your contributions.
    • You can use the Signature Icon.png button in the editing toolbar to quickly add a signature.
  • If you have any questions or need any help, please feel free to leave a message for a staff member.
  • If you have trouble with anything on the wiki or you're not sure about a specific topic, feel free to join the IRC.
  • You can also customize your user page if you like.
    • When uploading images for use on your user page, please add the prefix User Treacherousfiend to the file's name.
    • Additionally, if you would like to add any self-made content to the wiki, please do so by adding the prefix User:Treacherousfiend/ to the page title when you create the page.

Once again, welcome to the Team Fortress 2 Wiki!

Cropping images slightly

Cropping images to be a few pixels shorter to save space on the wiki is somewhat pointless, because the Wiki stores all previous versions of an images in addition to the current one. Plus, many of the images were ripped straight from the game files, so we're trying to use exactly what is in-game, rather than what looks nicer. Really the only situation to crop slight amounts is in tables where switching between tabs makes inconsistent cropping noticeable. Thanks for your interest in improving the Wiki, thank you for fixing any missing pixels, and have a good day! Memayz (talk) 16:56, 9 July 2021 (UTC)

My uploads are ripped directly from the files, I did the cropping automatically by using the magic wand tool (with 0 tolerance) on transparency and inverting it. This means any pixels that weren't exactly completely invisible (due to artifacting or otherwise) wouldn't get selected. It caused the images to be bigger in some cases, but smaller in most others without cropping any of the content. The only reason I mentioned the slight cropping was for posterity's sake. Because of the issues with some of the images I didn't want to grab the images directly from the wiki and then improve them from there, and getting the exact same cropping with the original files would be extremely tedious.
I also at least slightly disagree with saving space on the wiki because its more for the end user anyway, who only loads the most recent image and any bandwidth saved for people who are on mobile or limited connections is good.
Unfortunately cropping needs to be done because the original textures are 1024x1024 which just leaves a 'lot' of dead space which looks odd in any scenario that isn't directly in game. Thanks for your suggestions though! fiend (talk) 19:30, 9 July 2021 (UTC)
I will hold off on uploading any more images that have slight resolution differences for the time being though, at least until i'm sure that its ok. fiend (talk) 19:36, 9 July 2021 (UTC)
