Using screen to run servers

It is common practice to use screen to run servers in many distributions. Do you think a discussion of this would be appropriate here? Broseph 17:49, 2 January 2012 (PST)

 Yes I definitely think this is a good idea. It's very useful, especially since it allows you to close your connection with the server (the fact that you normally can't isn't even mentioned). --Scootz 20:57, 2 January 2012 (PST)

LSB bootup scripts

Since a lot of people use these scripts to restore the server workings at bootup, this seemed necessary.

OS X Dedicated Server

I'm in the (failing) process of trying to get a dedicated server to run on my home Mac. I'm not an expert in the command line, but I've managed to at least download and set up the server through SteamCMD. I just don't actually know how to get the server running and connected.

A few of the methods that I used were different enough from the Linux guide. It seems to want to run everything from an app, and I'm not sure if that happens on Linux. Also, the folder setup I ended up with for the server is different enough from how my regular mac Steam folders would be set up.

So following the Linux guide on here as it is wouldn't have helped me. I had to use the SteamCMD article on the Valve Dev wiki to start out. Plus there's a chance that maybe I'm just doing something wrong and I'm totally oblivious to that fact. And I can't find any relevant, up-to-date guides for doing this.

Should there be an OS X guide separate from the Linux guide? Or should any relevant info to accomplishing this be merged with this page? I do have some documentation that I wrote as personal notes, which seems to get the server set up, but as I said I'm not an expert on this. --Pakaku (talk) 04:56, 8 November 2014 (PST)

Requirement Changes

It looks like ia32-libs is no longer available under Ubunto 14-10. Getting the following:

Package ia32-libs is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source
However the following packages replace it:
 lib32z1 lib32ncurses5 lib32bz2-1.0

E: Package 'ia32-libs' has no installation candidate

Rewrite

Large parts of the article are inconsistent, outdated, or contain some bad practices. I will rewrite this when I get the time at some point, but if anyone else who knows enough of Linux wants to do it, go ahead. VasyaTheWizard ^{(talk) • (contributions)} 07:28, 18 September 2018 (UTC)
