Changes to first and second columns

First, many months back, looking at this list found me asking "Where is this sign?" Some I have not figured out, others I have found and I want to answer the questions I once had here. I am planning to add content and make corrections to this table, which I am willing to make as a collected edit. But, I wanted to address maintainability issues before I started, while there is less to move. I have wanted some protocol to help make the content of the first two columns easier to understand and maintain. I had considered tags; M:, Main:, or Prop: for properties. Sign: or Add: for signage only, and Prod: for products, but I think that would have been a mess, more difficult to explain and more difficult to enforce. I hope what I ended up with is more intuitive. I recognize that the present listing of properties is rife with omissions -- I am not presently attempting on my own to completely correct the problems in that column.

Benefits of the offered changes:

  1. Placing the product parenthetically into the first column helps that content follow the content of the Logos. This format is also useful for signs that might have only product names or that name two or more companies (especially agricultural retail signs like Farmers Feed & Seed Co. and Holdingford Mill)
  2. Listing the advertisement signage parenthetically helps the second column be clearer and less ambiguous. It now only contains one general type of thing, namely locations, which will make it cleaner to give locations of companies known only through comics (Conagher's) or combinations of comics, map, and other content (Captain Dan's). Also makes it easier and cleaner to indicate where companies have properties and where they just have signage. This is especially useful for "companies" that presently seem to have no properties in the known game maps.
  3. With the use of parentheses, I suggest the "and/or" be removed.

I note that I am not proficient with the translation switching. I have tried to maintain that functioning. I recognize that that some content I have added to this edit is not presently supported (Captain Dan's Edible Wood Pulp) (Is there already a translation string out there for "Sour Cream and Mayonnaise packets"?) This would be an opportunity for someone to help get up to speed on this, or otherwise help me update the translation switching.

Also, I throw hard returns before the open parenthesis for visual separation on the page and in the wikitext - I have no problem if someone tells me that is bad style here. Mikado282 (talk) 09:51, 22 March 2014 (PDT)

April 13, 2014

After months of study and preparation, I have added content in many places, and made several small edits, some long overdue. I have studied this template for some time before finally starting to add material. I have uploaded some new signs. However, now that I am in it, it is quite clear that I am linking user files (File:) where previously every previous picture is from the "Image:" space. I really hope this isn’t a problem, because I have long work on contributing to this page. If there is a problem, please help me fix it. I would not mind if anyone comes up with higher quality pictures.

Translators, I realize the formatting to cross reference paired signs adds some complexity, but some of the references are most clear when paired. Mikado282 (talk) 21:16, 13 April 2014 (PDT)

File: has the same usage as Image:, but Image: is focusing for only images. However, in the pages that created in the passed 2 years use File: at most. Anyway, I suggest to use File: more than Image: due lower character usage and it affects to the page when load. Yes, the 86 characters have a massive effect on page load. File: is more generic, meaning it allows for svg/etc file types--generic is more useful. Darkid (Talk | Contribs) 21:59, 13 April 2014 (PDT)
Thanks, both of you. Mikado282 (talk) 16:21, 14 April 2014 (PDT)

Future Talk

I'm thinking of limiting my talk here to structural issues with the template, and direct talk about content (companies and references) to the Talk:List of companies talk page. Good Plan? What is convention? Mikado282 (talk) 16:27, 14 April 2014 (PDT)

Largely to add Farmall and the Rottenburg signs, but also to complete many cells that have been long left incomplete.

  • Farmall; The red tractor sign has been bugging me since I started. I knew it was an International Harvester. (If it ain't RED; leave it in the SHED). On a separate note, I actually operated one of those "Ferguson System" set ups when I was in High School.
  • Klint’s; My English grandmother did all the cooking; but when a hog was slaughtered mein Großvater would be the one to cook all those parts on Klintz Hocks.

Team tendency for MVM only companies

What Should the alignment be for MVM only companies?

  • RED? Maybe not; really the Mann team is an amalgam of BLU and RED
  • Mann? Maybe.
  • None? Probably, since unless it is expressly clear, then the companies might not be Mann Co. fronts (OK, Discount Alchemist, possibly does have an alignment)
  • Her? (for Discount Alchemist, at least?)
