A Mann Co. Supply Crate Key is single-use tool item which is available at the Mann Co. Store. It is used for opening a Mann Co. Supply Crate, and can be applied to any regular series Crate in your backpack, where it is consumed, along with the crate, in the process. There are also two event keys, as detailed below.
To use the key, select the key then click the 'Use with...' button in the backpack and select the Crate you wish to open to start the process of applying it. When a crate is opened, a five second timer ticks down, alongside a sound effect of chains jangling and wood creaking. The player will receive one of a set of items, which are listed in the crates description and dependent on its series. This item is announced to the server in a similar format to regular dropped items.
The key is only available to be purchased from the Mann Co. Store; it cannot be found from random drops and cannot be crafted.

The Festive Winter Crate Key was a single-use tool item which was released during the Australian Christmas update. Like regular supply crate keys, they could be purchased in the Mann Co. Store and was used to open a Festive Winter Crate. They can no longer be obtained and any remaining festive keys have turned into normal keys.

One key was given out to each active player and it can open both the limited time Festive Winter Crate and regular Mann Co. Supply Crates. Unlike the Festive Winter Crate Key, these keys are untradable.

Trivia
- The backpack image for the key is a screenshot of a key model. The model was not distributed in the GCF, however, the textures were.
- The Mann Co. Supply Crate Key is currently listed twice in the catalog, as The Festive Winter Crate Key entry turned into a normal key on January 1st, 2011, along with all the Festive Keys in players' backpacks.
