Pălăriile (sau accesorii pentru cap) sunt piese de echipament cu propriile lor secţiuni 'PALARIE' în Ecranul cu Echipament. Fara nici un efect asupra gameplay-ului, pălăriile există doar pentru motive cosmotice. În total există 57 de pălării deblocabile. Valve au introdus primul set de 9 pălării odata cu update-u Sniper vs. Spy. Multe dintre următoarele update-uri majore au inclus seturi supliementare, inclusiv pălării proiectate de către membrii comunităţii.

Pălăriile pot fi deblocate întâmplător prin item item drop system şi prin utilizarea sistemului de crafting. Datorită şanselor reduse de a pica în mod întâmplător şi costurilor mari de crafting, ele tind să fie foarte căutate şi subiecte populare în comunitate.

În încercarea de a face pălăriile disponibile pe o scară largă fără a sacrifica rariratea celor existente, Valve a oferit unele pălării ca recompensă pentru completarea unor achievements. O scurta istorie a Pălăriilor

• Sniper vs Spy Update

Primele 9 pălării introduse joc, anunţate la update-ului o . Modelele claselor nu au fost modificate, astfel pălăriile pentru Scout, Soldier, Engineer Sniper ataşate implicit.

• The Classless Update

Următorul set de pălării este adăugat în joc, incluzând 18 pălării noi. (Cu un număr semnificativ mai mare de Poligoane decât prima generaţie de pălării.) Aceste pălării adesea cere utilizatorului să scoată pălăria preexistentă, modificând modelele şi creând 3 pălării "hatless" în proces. (Un al patrulea model "hatless" pentru Soldier este în fişierele jocului, dar nu ca o pălărie autonomă).

De la lansarea primelor palarii apar programe third-party care simuleaza un server normal in care jucatorii pot "lenevi" crescand astfel timpul lor de joc si sansele sa primeasca o palarie. Valve se impotriveste implementand o politica impotriva aplicatiilor externe, stergand toate palariile obtinute prin intermediul acestor aplicatii. Jucatorii care nu au folosit astfel de programe au premiati cu prima palarie speciala pentru toate clasele Cheater's Lament.

• 2009 Halloween special

Odata cu update-ul de Halloween au fost lansate inca 2 palarii speciale pentru toate clasele: Ghastly Gibus si Mildly Disturbing Halloween Mask. Palaria Gibus a fost anuntata pe blogul Team Fortress 2 si a fost oferita primilor 10,319 utilizatori care au accesat o pagina web ascunsa. Palaria a fost ulterior pusa la dispozitia tuturor, impreuna cu Mildly Disturbing Halloween Mask obtinute prin deblocarea unor Halloween achievements. The hat was subs Halloween achievements. The Gibus can still be worn by players today, however, the Halloween mask was limited to the event only and cannot be worn except during the appropriate event.

• November 2, 2009 Patch

Bill's Hat is added; another special, all-class hat, given to all players who pre-ordered the Valve game Left 4 Dead 2.

• January 27, 2010

Three new hats are added: The Towering Pillar of Hats, the Noble Amassment of Hats, and the Modest Pile of Hat. Special versions of these hats are awarded to the three winners of the Propaganda fanart contest, with first, second, and third placed ribbons attached.

• March 18, 2010

The first set of community hats from Valve's Contribute! site are patched in.

• April 15, 2010

All players who buy Sam and Max: The Devil's Playhouse within the first week of its release are rewarded with a special hat, Max's Severed Head, which is wearable by all classes.

• May 20, 2010

The second set of community hats from Valve's Contribute! site are patched in.

• July 19, 2010

Alien Swarm is released by Valve and with it a new piece of headgear wearable by all classes: the Alien Swarm Parasite. It is unlocked by completing the 'Hat Trick' achievement on Alien Swarm, making this the first item to be awarded for achievements in a game other than Team Fortress 2.

• August 24, 2010

All players who buy Worms: Reloaded before September 2nd, 2010 were rewarded with a special hat for the Soldier, the Lumbricus Lid.

Notes

1. Both hats and Miscellaneous items are considered headgear for crafting purposes.
2. Event hats and other hats of limited availability do not count toward the "Rebuild Headgear" recipe. These include Bill's Hat, the Ghastly Gibus, the Mildly Disturbing Halloween Mask, the Cheater's Lament, Max's Severed Head, the Earbuds, Alien Swarm Parasite and the Lumbricus Lid.

Trivia

• Sam's Hat, resembling the eponymous character's hat from the Sam & Max series, was to have been included with Max's Severed Head, the Lugermorph, and the Big Kill as part of the week-long cross promotion for purchasing Sam & Max: The Devil's Playhouse via Steam. It was eventually cut from the game because the modelling team had trouble getting the hat to properly fit each class, though team-specific textures remain in the game files.
• Currently, the only hat that can be specifically crafted and reliably acquired is the Bonk Helm, made by crafting together two Bonk! Atomic Punches and a Batter's Helmet.
• In the Mac Update, Valve referred to Team Fortress 2 as "America's #1 war-themed hat simulator", based on common complaints that the hats recieve more attention than the gameplay itself.
• The Engineer, Sniper and Scout have long had the most headgear and Miscellaneous items available to wear thanks to their own unique "Hatless" items which remove all headgear completely. Since the edition of the Soldier's own unique Lumbricus Lid for those who bought Worms Reloaded before September 2, 2010, the Soldier has the same amount of wearable hats as these other three classes. However, the Hatless items are not technically hats, meaning the Soldier actually has more.
