Oh dear, I've made quite a mess.
The Spy

The Familiar Fez is a headwear item for the Spy which was released with the Polycount Pack as part of the Mann-Conomy Update. It appears as a team-colored Fez and a pair of sunglasses that sit atop the Spy's regular balaclava.

Bugs

  • The sunglasses are actually attached to the Fez and not the face. On the wearer's death, both the hat and the sunglasses fall from the player and remain bound to each other.

Trivia

  • The fez was introduced in 1826 as part of the Ottoman empire's modernizing reforms.
  • The hat is a reference to Mustafa, one of Dr. Evil's henchmen in Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me. There are several links:
    • In the film, Austin says to Mustafa "I don't recall your name, but your fez is familiar." [1].
    • The artwork used for the pack's Polycount entry image was a recreation of a still of Mustafa in the same pose, and the creator had admitted to watching Austin Powers a week prior to designing the pack.
    • The entry's description mentions a "line of three question-format reasoning". In the film, Mustafa was unable to withhold answers after being asked the same question three times (because it irritated him).
