The Pyro Update is a patch for the Pyro, the second class to have a major content pack released, as well as the first shipment of community-made maps, Fastlane and Turbine. Meet the Sniper was released alongside the update, although listed at the bottom of the page rather than as a major part of the update, much like with the previously released Gold Rush Update. The update was released on June 19th, 2008. The update page also had a link leading to the Valve Developer Wiki, which detailed the design of Team Fortress 2 maps.

The page contained a link leading to the concept art for the Axtinguisher.

Upon the release of the Meet the Sniper, the Flare Gun was teased in the final frames of the video as the Sniper killed a Pyro wielding the weapon. Soon after, all three weapons were revealed in their entirety, and on the following day the 35 achievements were revealed.
