What the initial version of TF did have, though, was a Soldier class wielding the original Quake's iconic weapon, the rocket launcher. Now, fifteen years later, thanks to Bethesda and id software you too can wield that same rocket launcher in TF2, original sound effects and all.
Robin Walker

The Original is a promotional primary weapon for the Soldier. Styled after the weapon from Quake, it is a bulky, tan rocket launcher with a metallic tubular exhaust port, metallic and tan handles, as well as a distinctive oversized barrel.

This weapon functions identically to the Rocket Launcher, yet has additional minor changes. As with the Rocket Launcher in Quake, the Original's first-person view model is at the bottom-center of the screen, and its rockets are launched straight ahead of the Soldier, as opposed to being fired at an angle. The Soldier holds the weapon normally in third-person view. The Original also changes several standard weapon sound effects into sounds from the original Quake, such as the Rocket Launcher's switch, firing and explosion sounds.

The Original was awarded in Genuine quality to players who purchased Quake 4 on Steam before 10AM PDT (5PM UTC) on August 8, 2011. It was also awarded in Unique quality to players who purchased the Quakecon Bundle before August 6th, 2012 at 10AM PDT.

Bugs

  • Switching from the Original to any banners will cause the arms to briefly appear on the opposite side before returning to normal.
  • The reloading sound effect does not play, instead, it defaults to the Rocket Launcher's reload sound.
    • However, other players are able to hear the reloading sound effect playing.
  • Using Minimized viewmodels or high viewmodel_fov values causes another Soldier arm to appear on the left.[1]

Trivia

  • Most of the sounds triggered by the use of this weapon were remastered from the original Quake Rocket Launcher.
