* The damage resistance doesn't actually reduce damage by 35% in most circumstances. Instead, the battalion's backup takes the base damage of the weapon, and subtracts it from the damage the user is taking. For example, the [[Revolver]] has a base damage of 40, meaning that each shot from the revolver always deals 14 less damage when shooting a soldier with the battalion's backup. However, this doesn't take into account damage rampup and falloff. Because of this, the revolver will deal 46 damage at close range (60-14), and a pathetic 7 damage at the longest range (21-14). In practice, the farther you are away from the target, the more damage resistance the battalion's backup will provide, and vice versa.<ref> [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jRgXeUKch7Y Damage resistance demonstrated.] [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8l900phy8JY&feature=share&utm_source=EJGixIgBCJiu2KjB4oSJEQ]</ref>

Now don't get me wrong, YOU don't need back-up, but please dig deep in that war torn black pea of a heart and feel pity for the rest of your good-for-nothing team. All you need is the Battalion's Backup to give them a helping hand. Just make sure you ain't too busy kicking somebody's ass when they call.
Battalion's Backup publicity blurb

The Battalion's Backup is a community-created secondary weapon for the Soldier. It is a military backpack-mounted radio transceiver, featuring a folded map secured by two brown straps, along with an attached black magnetic compass. Accompanying it is a bronze-colored bugle with a pewter mouthpiece, and a tattered yellow triangular banner, patched up and reattached in the middle, that is displayed when the buff is active.

Essentially the counterpart to the Buff Banner, this weapon aims to support teams defensively, rather than offensively. Similar to the Buff Banner, the player's Rage meter, displayed in the HUD, is filled through dealing damage to other players in a single life; once filled, the pack can be used to make all nearby teammates within 450 units, and the player themselves, immune to critical hits, and grant them 35% resistance to regular damage, and a 50% resistance to sentry damage for 10 seconds. It is possible to delay the release of the effect of the Battalion's Backup after the bugle call, and thereby delaying the buffing effect, by holding down the primary fire key (default key: MOUSE1). Additionally, equipping the Battalion's Backup increases the Soldier's maximum health by 20 points to 220. The maximum possible overheal is also raised to 330 HP and 276 HP from the Quick-Fix.

The critical damage immunity applies to criticals and mini-crits for all teammates within the radius, regardless of critical/mini-crit application method. The critical immunity also prevents all increases to knockback normally incurred by a critical hit. The damage resistance stacks multiplicatively with all other damage modifiers, such as Pain Train's hitscan weakness and the Chargin' Targe's explosive resistance.

Bugs

  • The damage resistance doesn't actually reduce damage by 35% in most circumstances. Instead, the battalion's backup takes the base damage of the weapon, and subtracts it from the damage the user is taking. For example, the Revolver has a base damage of 40, meaning that each shot from the revolver always deals 14 less damage when shooting a soldier with the battalion's backup. However, this doesn't take into account damage rampup and falloff. Because of this, the revolver will deal 46 damage at close range (60-14), and a pathetic 7 damage at the longest range (21-14). In practice, the farther you are away from the target, the more damage resistance the battalion's backup will provide, and vice versa.[1]
  • If the player switches to another secondary weapon while the rage is active, the damage reduction buff will be deployed until the rage is depleted.
  • If the user switches to another banner, and then touches a Resupply locker, the rage will be carried over.
  • The strange variant of the item can rank up during battles against bots and when sv_cheats is set to 1.

Trivia

  • The Battalion's Backup resembles the US Military's Vietnam-era backpack-mounted radio transceiver, the AN/PRC-77.
  • The Battalion's Backup has separate, unique calls for both the RED and BLU teams. The Buff Banner also shares this feature.
  • The Battalion's Backup's flag was originally team-colored according to the polycount concept art.
