The Scout Update Hub

The Scout Update was the fourth major content update for Team Fortress 2.

Focus for this update was placed on the Scout. Three new weapons were provided with new achievements. Whilst lacking a Meet the Team video, the Scout was provided with unique voice responses to his new weapons and gameplay events. Several new maps, Egypt, Watchtower and Junction were made official, and a large patch was made to the existing map Fastlane. The update was released on February 24, 2009.

Update Progress

This update expanded on the day by day release system previously used by the Heavy Update. The update also gave the community a new level of control through a voting system to determine the unlock order of the weapons through achievement milestones.

Trivia

  • Fans that mailed in the coupons would later receive gifts in the mail from Valve as a reward for their devotion. At the bottom of the page, players were given the choice to vote on which weapon they desired to unlock first.
  • Pipeline was hinted at on the Bonk! Atomic Punch page, but would not be released until the Sniper vs. Spy Update.
  • Shortly after the update, Scout players could stay under the effects of Bonk! Atomic Punch indefinitely. This was soon patched out.
  • The Force-A-Nature could originally cause knockback with minimal damage dealt, and disguised enemy Spies were affected. The strength of the knockback was also far weaker.
  • Bonk! Atomic Punch originally had a cooldown after the invulnerability wore off that slowed the Scout to the speed of a Heavy. This was offset by a shorter resupply time. This slowdown was originally linked to the Retire the Runner achievement, which is now linked to Crit-A-Cola.
  • The Sandman was vastly different upon release than the current incarnation.
    • It would completely stop player movement when they were stunned.
    • It originally had the ability to stun Übercharged players.
    • It removed the Scout's double jump instead of incurring a health penalty.
    • It originally did -50% damage against non-stunned opponents.
