The weapon fires low-damage flare projectiles that travel at approximately 2000 Hammer units per second (roughly 38 m/s or 125 ft/s). The flares have a shallow trajectory curve that causes them to drop vertical distance drastically at long range. Enemies hit by the flare take minor damage and are set on fire. The damage dealt is not subject to damage falloff or ramp-up from distance. Additionally, flares deliver critical hits on targets who are already on fire. Unlike most other weapons that require reloading, the Flare Gun is reloaded even if the player switches to a different weapon before the reload animation plays.

A Pyro with the Flare Gun can ignite enemies out of range of their f<!-- -->lamethrower, though this does require careful aim. It is particularly useful for distracting Snipers from their scoping and Engineers from their buildings. The primary uses of the weapon are for finishing off fleeing opponents or setting enemies alight quickly at range.

This article is about the Pyro's secondary weapon. For other flare guns, see Flare Gun (disambiguation).
It allows the Pyro to ignite an enemy at long range, but does require careful aim on their part. It’s particularly useful for causing havoc on Snipers and Engineers who want to keep their distance.
Flare Gun publicity blurb

The Flare Gun is an unlockable secondary weapon for the Pyro. It is a single-shot, team-colored flare gun with a flared barrel.

The flare disintegrates on contact with any surface, or with flares fired by the opposing team, with a hissing noise. While the weapon cannot be fired while the player is underwater, the flare can damage (but not ignite) submerged enemies if fired from land.

Taunting with the Flare Gun equipped results in the Hadouken kill taunt.

The Flare Gun is automatically given to any player who obtains 10 Pyro achievements.
