This mighty axe guarantees critical hits on any enemy that’s currently on fire, although it’s significantly weaker against enemies who aren’t.
— Axtinguisher publicity blurb

The Axtinguisher is a melee weapon for the Pyro. A crudely constructed tool, it consists of a slightly rusted axe-head stained with blood and wrapped in barbed wire, affixed to a curved wooden handle with a fabric grip and a splintered end.

The weapon deals half the damage of the regular Fire Axe on non-burning players and never randomly deals critical hits. The Axtinguisher may randomly roll for critical hits with the animation swing and electricity sound-effect, but will not actually achieve a critical hit with appropriate notification and increased damage. While attacking targets that are on fire however, it is guaranteed to critically hit and does not suffer from reduced damage. When affected by a crit boost, the Axtinguisher crits like other weapons (dealing three times base damage), but still suffers the 50% damage penalty against non-burning opponents. The weapon has no discernible effects against buildings, functioning identical to the Fire Axe.

The Axtinguisher is automatically given to any player who obtains 22 Pyro achievements.

Trivia

  • Pyros will catch fire briefly when they are damaged by a Flamethrower or are hit by the Flare Gun. Due to this, two or more Pyros can work together to "axtinguish" enemy Pyros. It is even possible to do this solo with the Degreaser's faster weapon switch time.
  • In the censored version of Team Fortress 2, the Axtinguisher is not stained with blood.
