— Haunted Hallowe'en Special

Harvest is a King of the Hill map. It was released with the Haunted Halloween Special Update as an official community-developed map due to its outstanding quality. A separate Halloween-themed version of the map, Harvest Event, was also released with the update for players to celebrate the annual holiday. It includes many gameplay elements that are unique to the map.

Goal

Your goal is to capture the Control Point and seize it for a duration of 3 minutes while stopping the other team from doing the same.

Locations

  • The Center Shed - At the center of the map, a bombed-out shed houses the Control Point. This building is open at both ends, and most of the roof is missing.
  • The Farmhouses - Located directly in front of each team's spawn area, these large houses have two stories with windows and a roof overlooking the center shed.
  • Side Sheds - Open at one end, these contain a Medpack.

Halloween Event

Introduced in the Hallowe'en Special (29 October–9 November 2009), a special, spooky themed version, koth_harvest_event, was made available for play. In this version, health packs are instead replaced with chocolate bars and candy tins. Pumpkin bombs are scattered strategically throughout the map and explode when shot, damaging anyone around them. Killed players will randomly drop a Crit-boosting Halloween pumpkin full of candy (possible only during the Hallowe'en Special). Also, the ghost of Zepheniah Mann wanders around the map, haunting any players who venture too close.

Common strategies

  • The center shed provides more cover for attackers than defenders. Capturing the point is easiest with support from team members outside the shed.
  • Soldiers and Demomen can jump onto the roof of the shed with rockets or stickies and attack from above. It's also possible to lob grenades or syringes in through the roof.
  • The peaked roof of the farmhouse can provide cover for Snipers if they stand on the back of the roof and fire over it at the enemy, but this prevents them from firing at the area between the farmhouse and the center shed.
  • Snipers like to stay in the upper levels of their team's farmhouses. If you happen to be in the area, take a moment to sweep the upper floor for enemy Snipers.
  • Scouts can double-jump to the middle shed and then across to the other team's building. This can be useful if the ground-level area is highly contested.

Trivia

  • Harvest is one of the three maps developed by Sean "Heyo" Cutino that were brought to official status by Valve, the others being Egypt and Junction - the latter two released with The Scout Update.
  • Harvest was initially an Arena map. This version is still available for download.
  • The King of the Hill version was bundled with the Big King KotH map pack prior to its promotion to official map.
  • In the Event version of the map, there are tombstones around the map with text on them. Two include "RIP Zepheniah Mann" and "RIP The Tenth Class".
  • Also in the Event version, there is a fully textured room underneath the capture point which appears to be where the Ghost is stored until it is triggered. It appears to contain a bench, television and set of lockers. A video of it can be seen here.
  • This map is the only official KOTH Map without Bot Support.
